Anglers are considered to be custodians of the river environment. They pay towards its protection through licence fees and rents and spend more time on the river than any other group of people.

As frequent visitors to the River Eden and its tributaries many anglers already help in a number of way including;

Net Limitation Order Update 2008
The NLO and byelaw package which has recently been confirmed applies a variety of further regulations to the Solway Haaf net fishery and the rivers Eden and Border Esk.  In short the changes are as follows:

For the Solway net fishery
- A reduction in the number of available licences from 155 down to 105
- Introduction of a daily close period between 10pm and 10am the following morning.
- Extending the weekly close period from between 6am Saturday and midnight the following Sunday to between 10pm Friday evening to 10am the following Monday.
- Moving the seaward boundary of the fishery inshore by 4km.

For the rivers Eden and Border Esk
- Anglers are only allowed to kill a maximum of 2 salmon and 2 sea trout in a day.
-
Anglers can continue to fish after killing 2 fish but must return any further fish caught.
- Anglers must return all female salmon and sea trout from and including the 10th September to the end of the relevant season.
