Water Supplies
Water supplies need to be put in place to provide sources of cheap, clean water for livestock without them directly accessing the river. There are various ways to do this;
- troughs sunk into small streams or springs with the approach armoured with hardcore. However
the watercourse can still be polluted with silt and dung.
- the 'pasture pump' which siphons water from the river to a small trough on the bank using the power providing by stock pushing against a piston with their nose.
- In situations where none of these solutions are appropriate or in cases where there is concern over livestock contracting Leptospirosis from the watercourse the only solution is the use of piped mains water. This is the most costly solution requiring pipeline, connection and ongoing charges and can be difficult in remote locations.
