Could you be one of our new trustees?

We’re on the lookout for new trustees to join our board. If you live or work in the Eden catchment, are interested in the environment and are passionate about the Eden Valley, why not apply now? (Get your applications in by 31 March!)

Trustees are individuals who make decisions on behalf of the charity and bring local knowledge, professional experience and a variety of perspectives to the board. They govern, support and develop the strategic direction of the Trust, ensuring the charity does all that it can for the good of Eden’s rivers and communities.

One such individual is David Unwin. Recently appointed, he shares his reasons for wanting to become a trustee:

I have always supported ERT and been passionate about the river Eden. Having had a small organic farm within higher level stewardship that included a stretch of Croglin Water, I felt I had a basic understanding of the work that the charity does and why they do it … and it seemed the right moment to put time into a cause I feel strongly about, particularly now as our river systems are in crisis and need all the help they can get to regain their health and biodiversity.

The time was right for David to consider becoming a trustee as he has retired from farming and full-time General Practice. However, the time commitment is modest, so this voluntary role can suit anyone with a job and/or caring responsibilities.

Being a trustee is not just about attending board meetings. Since becoming a trustee, David has had the opportunity to go out and about with the staff team:

I have very much enjoyed learning about the current activities and projects … going as far afield as Carlisle; seeing the habitat created for water voles in the upper reaches of the Lowther; the re-landscaping beside the Petteril, and the enhancing of natural flood prevention measures. It has been a joy spending time with such a knowledgeable and enthusiastic group of people.

Could you become a trustee of Eden Rivers Trust?

Elizabeth Radford, ERT’s Chief Executive Officer explains who can become a trustee:

“Our trustees come from all walks of life, and anyone over 18 can be one. Our aim is to develop and broaden the diversity of our Board of Trustees; we are working towards an equal gender balance as well as ensuring a variety of perspectives and backgrounds so that our governance is as robust and as representative as possible of the communities we work with.

“We’d love to hear from you if you are passionate about rivers and we particularly welcome applications from people from the Carlisle, Penrith and Kirkby Stephen areas, where we are currently under-represented.”
